Consultation on Stanmer Conservation Area Review
The council’s Cabinet Member Meeting for the Environment has approved a
draft conservation area appraisal and boundary review for Stanmer for
public consultation.
The appraisal notes that Stanmer Conservation Area comprises three
distinct, but interrelated, character areas; the House, the Village and
the Parkland. The polite architecture of the House contrasts with the
highly picturesque style of the village. Views of the House and elegant
church spire from the surrounding parkland are important to the identity
and character of the area. As a whole, Stanmer Conservation Area retains
a quiet, secluded character, comprising all major elements of an 18th
century estate.
The report identifies the special architectural and historic interest of
the area that should be preserved or enhanced, and proposes a number of
recommendations and boundary changes, including:
Removal of the area to the south of the A27.
Inclusion of woodland to the east and west which forms an integral part
of the 18th century landscape.
Inclusion of the walled garden to the northeast of the area.
Extension to include a 19th century farm structure to the north of the
village.
An Article 4(2) Direction under the General Permitted Development Order
to ensure future planning control over minor alterations to unlisted
dwellings.
Hard copies are available for inspection during normal office hours at
the CityDirect Offices at Hove Town Hall and Bartholomew House.
The council welcomes your comments on these proposals, to be received by
no later than 5pm on 4thFebruary 2010. Any views expressed as part of
the consultation process will be considered when preparing the final
draft for Council adoption. Comments can be made by email or in writing
